Recurrent Ear Infections in Children, Woodstock, GA
Chiropractic does not treat ear infections
.
Parents come to us about ear infections when they are on the third or fourth round of antibiotics in a winter and someone has started using the word tubes. The question is never about treating the current infection. It is about why this keeps happening.
Let us be clear about the boundary first. An active ear infection belongs with your pediatrician, and a child in pain with a fever needs medical assessment, not an adjustment. What we look at is the pattern between episodes, and specifically whether the middle ear is draining as well as it should.
Why Do Some Children Get Them Repeatedly?
Recurrence is usually about drainage and anatomy rather than bad luck, and part of that is mechanical.
Eustachian tube angle and size
In young children the tube connecting the middle ear to the throat is short and nearly horizontal, so fluid drains poorly. This improves with growth, which is why most children outgrow the pattern.
Upper neck restriction and muscle tension
The muscles that open the eustachian tube when a child swallows attach around the upper neck and jaw. Restriction and tension there can affect how effectively the tube opens, and that is a mechanical factor we can address.
Lingering fluid between infections
Fluid that sits in the middle ear after an infection is a ready environment for the next one. Improving drainage between episodes is the part that can change the cycle.
Other contributors that are not ours
Allergies, cigarette smoke exposure, daycare exposure, bottle feeding while lying flat and enlarged adenoids all raise risk. Some are worth discussing with your pediatrician or an allergist.
What Does the Pattern Look Like?
- Repeated infections through autumn and winter
- Pulling or tugging at one ear, often worse lying down
- Disturbed sleep and irritability before the fever appears
- Reduced hearing or turning the volume up after an episode
- Speech development that seems slow to a parent
- Balance that seems off, or more stumbling than usual
Who Handles What?
This is the clearest way to explain where we sit, because the boundary genuinely matters here.
| Situation | Who leads | Our role |
|---|---|---|
| Active infection with fever and pain | Pediatrician | None until it is managed |
| Fluid persisting after infections | Pediatrician | Support drainage mechanics between episodes |
| Recurrent pattern, child otherwise well | Shared | Upper neck and muscle work, drainage support |
| Tubes being considered | ENT specialist | Support alongside, never instead of |
How Do We Assess a Child?
We check upper cervical motion, the muscles around the jaw and upper neck that influence tube function, and lymphatic congestion through the neck. We also ask carefully about the timing of episodes, since a pattern tied to seasons or daycare points elsewhere.
A first visit for a baby is mostly conversation and gentle hands. We take a full birth and feeding history, watch how your baby moves, turns and settles, and check the spine and cranium with light fingertip contact. Nothing about the examination is forceful and most babies sleep or feed through it. You get a clear explanation of what we found and whether we think we can help, and if we do not think we can, we will tell you that instead of booking a plan.
What Does Care Involve?
Gentle, focused on drainage mechanics, and always alongside medical care rather than in place of it.
Gentle upper cervical adjusting
Light, age-appropriate pediatric adjusting to restore motion in the upper neck, where the muscles influencing tube function attach.
Soft tissue and lymphatic work
Gentle release around the jaw, upper neck and lymph drainage pathways to help fluid move rather than sit.
Home support
Positioning at sleep, avoiding bottle feeding while flat, and encouraging swallowing and chewing that naturally works the tube.
Coordination with your pediatrician
We are glad to work alongside medical care and we will never suggest declining treatment your doctor recommends.
What Would Success Look Like?
The measure is not this week, it is the season. We look at how many episodes occur over the following months compared with the same period last year, and whether fluid clears faster between them. That takes a few months to judge properly, so we agree the trial length at the start and review it honestly. Most children also outgrow the pattern as the tube angle changes with growth.
When to Call Your Pediatrician Instead
See your pediatrician promptly for ear pain with fever, discharge from the ear, a child who is unwell or unusually drowsy, swelling or redness behind the ear, severe headache with neck stiffness, or any concern about hearing or speech development.
None of that is a chiropractic problem, and we will send you to your pediatrician or to urgent care rather than adjust around it. We are also happy to work alongside your pediatrician, lactation consultant or pediatric dentist, and we would rather co-manage than compete for your baby care.
Questions We Get Asked Most
Can chiropractic cure ear infections?
No. An infection is a medical condition and needs medical assessment. What we work on is the mechanical side of drainage between episodes, which is a different question from treating an active infection.
Should I still give the antibiotics my doctor prescribed?
Yes. Those decisions belong entirely with your pediatrician and we will never advise against them. We work alongside medical care, not instead of it.
Will this stop my child needing tubes?
We cannot promise that, and the decision belongs with your ENT specialist. Some families use a trial of conservative care first, which is a reasonable conversation to have with your doctor rather than with us.
How often would my child need to come in?
Usually a short series over several weeks, then review. We are looking at a seasonal pattern, so care is not intended to be indefinite. If nothing changes over an agreed period, we will say so.
