.
The short answerPregnancy sciatica is leg pain from an irritated sciatic nerve, and in pregnancy the usual culprit is pelvic imbalance and deep hip muscle tension rather than a disc. Gentle pelvic care addresses it without medication.

Pregnancy sciatica turns simple things into calculations. Which side to sleep on, how long you can stay in the car, whether the walk from the parking lot is worth it. The pain runs from your buttock into the back of the thigh, sometimes past the knee, and it often arrives in the second or third trimester without any obvious injury.

The good news is that in pregnancy this is usually not a disc problem. Far more often it is the pelvis and the deep hip muscles, and both respond well to gentle, specific care that is entirely appropriate while you are expecting.

What Causes Sciatica in Pregnancy?

These are the things we look for underneath the symptom.

Pelvic and sacroiliac imbalance

The sciatic nerve passes right by the sacroiliac joints. When one is restricted, the local irritation and the muscle guarding around it are enough to set the nerve off, and the pain follows its path down the leg.

Deep hip muscle tension

The nerve travels beside the piriformis and the deep hip rotators. As your centre of gravity shifts forward, those muscles work considerably harder, and a tight one can compress the nerve directly.

Ligament softening and load change

Relaxin loosens pelvic ligaments while your weight distribution changes weekly. The pelvis relies more on muscular control, so small asymmetries produce bigger symptoms than they would otherwise.

Baby position and uterine pressure

Later in pregnancy, position can add pressure through the pelvis. It is rarely the whole story, and the pelvic mechanics remain the part we can actually change.

What Does It Feel Like?

  • Pain from the buttock down the back of the thigh, usually one side
  • Burning, shooting or electric quality rather than a dull ache
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg, calf or foot
  • Worse with sitting, driving or standing in one place
  • Difficulty finding a sleeping position that does not aggravate it
  • Sometimes a leg that feels heavy or unreliable on stairs

Where Is It Coming From?

Sorting these out determines the plan, and in pregnancy the answer is usually one of the first two rows.

What you noticeMost likely sourceWhat care involves
Deep buttock ache, worse rolling over, stops above the kneeSacroiliac and pelvic imbalanceWebster Technique and gentle pelvic adjusting
Sore deep in the buttock, changes with hip positionDeep hip muscle compressing the nerveTargeted soft tissue release, hip mechanics
Travels past the knee, worse coughing or bending forwardLumbar disc involvementCareful assessment, gentle care, medical liaison
Pain with numbness in both legs or the groinNeeds urgent medical assessmentSame-day referral, not chiropractic care

How Do We Find the Cause?

We assess pelvic and sacral position, test each sacroiliac joint, and check the deep hip muscles along the path of the nerve. Everything is done in side-lying or supported positions, so no part of the examination requires you to lie flat on your front.

Your first visit is a discovery visit. It includes a full consultation, a set of INSiGHT nervous system scans and, when your history calls for it, digital X-rays taken on site. You leave with a Report of Findings in plain language: what we found, what we would do about it, and how we will measure whether it is working.

What Does Care Look Like?

Gentle, pregnancy-specific, and aimed at the mechanics irritating the nerve.

Webster Technique

A specific sacral analysis and adjustment through the ICPA. Webster Technique reduces sacral and pelvic imbalance, which is the most common driver of pregnancy sciatica.

Gentle pelvic and lumbar adjusting

Side-lying, pregnancy-pillow supported adjustments with light force. Nothing about it should feel forceful or precarious.

Deep hip and glute release

Massage therapy through the piriformis and deep hip rotators takes direct pressure off the nerve, and our therapists are experienced with prenatal positioning.

Position and sleep strategy

Which side to lie on, where the pillows go, how long to sit before moving. Practical changes that stop you re-irritating the nerve between visits.

How Long Until It Eases?

Many people notice a change within the first two or three visits, most reliably in the distance the pain travels down the leg. Because pregnancy keeps changing the load, care usually continues at a reduced frequency until birth to keep the pelvis balanced. Sciatica that begins in pregnancy commonly resolves quickly after birth once weight distribution normalises, particularly with postpartum pelvic care.

When You Need Something Other Than Chiropractic

Seek urgent care for numbness in the groin or saddle area, difficulty controlling bladder or bowel, weakness that is worsening, pain in both legs, or any bleeding, fluid loss, contractions or reduced fetal movement.

We screen for those findings at every first visit, and we refer the same day when we see them. If a fair trial of care is not moving your objective findings, we will say so and point you to the right practitioner rather than keep you in the schedule.

Questions We Get Asked Most

Is chiropractic safe for sciatica during pregnancy?

Yes. Care is adapted with pregnancy pillows and side-lying positions, and the force used is gentle. Prenatal care is a core part of this practice and Dr. Amanda is ICPA certified in Webster Technique.

Can I take anything for the pain?

That question belongs with your midwife or OB, and we will never contradict them. What we can offer is a non-medication route to reducing the mechanical cause, which is often exactly what people are looking for.

Should I be stretching it?

Careful glute and hip stretching often helps, but aggressive nerve stretching usually makes things worse. We will show you which two or three movements suit your findings rather than a generic routine from the internet.

Will it come back after the baby arrives?

Usually it settles substantially once weight distribution returns to normal. Postpartum pelvic care helps it settle faster and reduces the chance of it lingering, and the same visit is a good opportunity to have the baby checked. See our pelvic and SI joint page.
