Pelvic and SI Joint Pain Relief in Woodstock, GA
Pelvic and SI joint pain is a deep, one-sided ache at the back of the pelvis that flares when you roll over, stand on one leg or climb stairs
.
Pelvic and SI joint pain has a signature. It sits deep and low on one side, just inside the dimple above your buttock, and the things that set it off are ordinary: rolling over in bed, getting out of the car, standing on one leg to pull on a sock, carrying a toddler on one hip.
The sacroiliac joints join your sacrum to the pelvis and are built for stability rather than movement. They only need to shift a few millimetres, so when one stops doing that properly the surrounding muscles clamp down to protect it and the ache becomes a daily companion.
What Causes SI Joint Pain?
These are the things we look for underneath the symptom.
Pregnancy hormones and changing load
Relaxin softens pelvic ligaments to prepare for birth, which is necessary and also means the joints rely more on muscle control. Add a shifting centre of gravity and one side commonly takes more than its share.
Asymmetric daily habits
Carrying a child on the same hip, standing with weight on one leg, sleeping curled the same way each night. The pelvis adapts to whatever you do most, and it does not care that it was unintentional.
A fall on the tailbone or hip
Old injuries matter here. A fall onto the buttock, even years ago, can leave one SI joint moving differently, and the problem often does not announce itself until pregnancy or a new sport loads it.
Weak or poorly timed deep core control
The deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles stabilise these joints. After pregnancy or a long period of inactivity their timing is often off, so the joint gets its stability from clenched superficial muscles instead.
What Does It Feel Like?
- A deep ache on one side at the back of the pelvis
- Sharp pain rolling over in bed or getting out of the car
- Pain standing on one leg, on stairs or pushing a shopping cart
- Ache spreading into the buttock or the back of the thigh
- A sense that one hip sits higher or feels unstable
- Groin or pubic discomfort at the same time
SI Joint or Something Else?
Low back, hip and SI pain overlap, and the distinction changes where we work.
| What you notice | Most likely source | What care involves |
|---|---|---|
| One-sided, worse rolling over and on one leg | SI joint dysfunction | Specific pelvic adjusting, Webster in pregnancy |
| Central low back ache, worse bending forward | Lumbar joints or disc | Lumbar adjusting, decompression if disc involved |
| Pain in the groin or deep in the front of the hip | Hip joint | Hip mechanics and soft tissue work |
| Pain over the pubic bone with walking | Pubic symphysis | Pelvic balancing and load management |
How Do We Find the Cause?
We test each SI joint for movement and provocation, compare pelvic landmarks, and look at how you load through one leg. In pregnancy the assessment is adapted so you are never positioned uncomfortably.
Your first visit is a discovery visit. It includes a full consultation, a set of INSiGHT nervous system scans and, when your history calls for it, digital X-rays taken on site. You leave with a Report of Findings in plain language: what we found, what we would do about it, and how we will measure whether it is working.
What Does Care Look Like?
Restore even motion through the pelvis, take the guarding off the muscles, then hold it with a couple of habit changes.
Specific pelvic and SI adjusting
Gentle, targeted adjustments to the restricted joint. In pregnancy we use pregnancy pillows and side-lying positions, so nothing about it feels precarious.
Webster Technique in pregnancy
Dr. Amanda is certified through the ICPA in Webster Technique, a specific sacral analysis and adjustment that reduces pelvic and sacral imbalance and the ligament tension that comes with it.
Soft tissue work
Massage therapy through the glutes, deep hip rotators and low back releases the muscles that have been splinting the joint, which is usually what allows the correction to hold.
Two habits, not twenty exercises
Which side you carry on, how you get out of bed, how you sit at work. Small, specific and repeatable beats a printed programme every time.
How Quickly Does It Improve?
Many people feel a difference within the first two or three visits, especially with the rolling-over pain. Pregnancy is a moving target, since load keeps changing week to week, so care usually continues at a lower frequency through the rest of the pregnancy to keep the pelvis balanced as the baby grows. Postpartum recovery follows the return of deep core timing, which takes months rather than weeks.
When You Need Something Other Than Chiropractic
Get medical assessment for pelvic pain with fever, pain following a significant fall or collision, numbness in the groin or saddle area, difficulty controlling bladder or bowel, or in pregnancy for any bleeding, fluid loss or reduced fetal movement.
We screen for those findings at every first visit, and we refer the same day when we see them. If a fair trial of care is not moving your objective findings, we will say so and point you to the right practitioner rather than keep you in the schedule.
Questions We Get Asked Most
Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
Yes, and prenatal care is one of the largest parts of our practice. Positioning is adapted with pregnancy pillows and side-lying setups, and the force used is gentle. Dr. Amanda holds ICPA certification in Webster Technique specifically for this work.
Do I need a referral from my midwife or OB?
No referral is needed, and we are always glad to communicate with your birth team. Many local midwives and doulas are familiar with this kind of care and will often suggest it for exactly these symptoms.
Will a support belt help?
It can take the edge off while the joint settles, and it is a reasonable short-term tool. It does not restore motion, so on its own it tends to manage the symptom rather than change it.
Can I still come in postpartum?
Please do. The pelvis went through a great deal and the deep stabilising muscles need time and input to come back online. Early postpartum care is gentle and often includes checking the baby too, which our infant torticollis page explains.
