Anxiety and the Physical Nervous System, Woodstock, GA

Chiropractic is not a treatment for anxiety

.
The short answerChiropractic is not a treatment for anxiety. What we can address is the physical side of it: raised muscle tone, restricted breathing mechanics and an autonomic system stuck in alert. For some people, changing that physical load helps.

We want to be honest on this page, because a lot of chiropractic marketing around anxiety is not. Anxiety is a mental health condition, it is treated by therapists and physicians, and nothing we do replaces that. If you are struggling, please talk to your doctor.

What we do have is a measurable view of the physical side. Anxiety has a body component: shallow breathing, a locked mid-back, shoulders that never drop, and an autonomic nervous system weighted heavily toward alert. Those things are real, they are measurable, and they can be influenced.

What Is the Physical Side of Anxiety?

These are the components we can assess. They are part of the picture, not the whole of it.

Breathing mechanics

Anxious breathing is fast, shallow and high in the chest. That pattern maintains the alert state chemically as well as mechanically, and a stiff mid-back and rib cage make it harder to break out of.

Sustained muscle tone

The shoulders, jaw and neck stay partly contracted. Beyond being uncomfortable, that constant muscular input feeds back into the nervous system as more evidence that something is wrong.

Autonomic imbalance

The alert branch of the nervous system dominates and the recovery branch struggles to take over. Scanning shows this fairly clearly, and it explains why rest does not feel restful.

Poor recovery capacity

Low heart rate variability means the system does not shift gears easily. That makes ordinary stressors feel larger, because there is less capacity in reserve to absorb them.

What Do People Describe Physically?

  • A chest that feels tight, with breathing that will not go deep
  • Shoulders and jaw held up all day
  • A stomach that reacts to everything
  • Difficulty falling asleep because the body will not settle
  • Racing heart or a fluttering sensation
  • Feeling exhausted and simultaneously unable to rest

How Do We Find the Cause?

We measure the physical markers: autonomic balance on thermography, resting muscle activity on surface EMG, and recovery capacity on heart rate variability. We also assess how freely your rib cage and mid-back move, since breathing depends on both.

Your first visit is a discovery visit. It includes a full consultation, a set of INSiGHT nervous system scans and, when your history calls for it, digital X-rays taken on site. You leave with a Report of Findings in plain language: what we found, what we would do about it, and how we will measure whether it is working.

What Would Care Involve?

Physical work on the physical component, coordinated with the people managing everything else.

Gentle, specific adjustments

Restoring motion through the mid-back and neck reduces constant input into an alert system and makes deeper breathing mechanically easier. Adjustments here are typically low-force.

Breathing retraining

Diaphragmatic breathing measurably changes heart rate variability. It is simple, free and something you own, and we teach it in the room.

Calming bodywork

Massage therapy with therapists who work specifically on nervous system regulation rather than deep pressure. Several of ours are experienced with sensitive systems.

Objective review

Re-scanning at agreed intervals, so the question of whether this is helping has an answer that is not dependent on how this week went.

What Kind of Change Is Realistic?

Realistically, we expect to influence the physical markers and, for some people, how their body feels day to day. Some notice sleeping better or breathing more easily within a few weeks. That is a genuine improvement and it is not the same as treating anxiety. If the scans move and you feel no different, we will say so and encourage you to put your energy where it will do more good.

When You Need More Than This

Please seek medical care for chest pain, breathlessness, fainting or a racing heart that does not settle, since those need to be assessed properly rather than assumed to be anxiety. New or worsening panic symptoms also deserve a conversation with your physician.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to your nearest emergency department. Chiropractic care is not a treatment for a mental health condition and does not replace therapy or medication. We work alongside your physician and therapist, and we will tell you plainly when what you need is a referral rather than an adjustment.

Questions We Get Asked Most

Can a chiropractor treat anxiety?

No. Anxiety is a mental health condition and treating it is outside our scope. We can address the physical components that accompany it, and be clear about the boundary rather than blur it for marketing purposes.

Should I stop my medication if I start care here?

Absolutely not, and we will never suggest it. Medication decisions belong entirely with your prescriber. Anyone in any profession suggesting otherwise is behaving irresponsibly.

Why would an adjustment affect how I feel?

Mechanically, it reduces one stream of input into a system already on alert and makes deeper breathing easier. That is a modest, plausible physical effect. It is not the same as a mood treatment and we will not describe it as one.

Is it worth coming in if my anxiety is well managed already?

Possibly, if you are carrying physical tension, poor sleep or a body that will not settle. That is a reasonable reason to come. See our chronic stress page for what the measuring side looks like.
