.
The short answerTorticollis is a strong head turn or tilt preference in a baby, usually from tightness on one side of the neck. Early gentle care matters, because a persistent preference affects feeding, flat head shape and motor milestones.

Torticollis is usually spotted by a parent before anyone else. Your baby always looks the same way, always sleeps with their head at the same angle, and feeds beautifully on one side while fighting the other. There may be a flattening developing on one part of the skull.

This one matters more than most, and it matters early. A baby who cannot turn both ways comfortably keeps loading the same side of the head, feeds asymmetrically and often reaches milestones like rolling unevenly. It responds well to gentle work, and the sooner it starts the easier it is.

What Causes Torticollis in Babies?

These are the things we look for underneath the symptom.

Position in the womb

A crowded or fixed position late in pregnancy, particularly in a first pregnancy or with twins, can leave one side of the neck shorter and tighter than the other from day one.

Birth strain

A long labour, a fast delivery, or an assisted birth using forceps or vacuum places real force through a baby neck. Restriction and muscle guarding on one side is a common result.

Muscular tightness in the sternocleidomastoid

This is the long muscle down the side of the neck. When it is tight or has developed a small fibrous thickening, it holds the head in a tilt and limits turning to the opposite side.

Habit reinforcement

Once a preference exists, everything reinforces it. The cot position, where the light and the door are, which arm you carry on. That is why part of care happens at home rather than here.

What Do Parents Notice?

  • A baby who always turns the head the same way
  • A visible tilt of the head toward one shoulder
  • Resistance or crying when you turn the head the other way
  • Feeding well on one side and struggling on the other
  • Flattening developing on one side or the back of the head
  • Rolling or reaching more readily on one side than the other

Why Acting Early Matters

Torticollis is not just a neck problem, and this is what tends to follow if it persists.

Knock-on effectWhy it happensWhat early care changes
Flat head shapeConstant pressure on the same spotRestoring turning spreads the load
One-sided feedingTurning to that side is uncomfortableBoth sides become available again
Uneven rolling and reachingMovement develops around the restrictionMore symmetrical motor development
Facial asymmetrySustained pressure through growthReduced by resolving the preference early

How Do We Assess a Baby?

We measure how far your baby turns each way and how far the head tilts, feel along the sternocleidomastoid for tightness or thickening, and check the upper neck and upper back for restriction. We also look at whether the pelvis and hips move evenly.

A first visit for a baby is mostly conversation and gentle hands. We take a full birth and feeding history, watch how your baby moves, turns and settles, and check the spine and cranium with light fingertip contact. Nothing about the examination is forceful and most babies sleep or feed through it. You get a clear explanation of what we found and whether we think we can help, and if we do not think we can, we will tell you that instead of booking a plan.

What Does Care Involve?

A combination of in-office gentle work and daily home exercises. The home part does most of the heavy lifting.

Feather-light adjusting

Fingertip work to the restricted upper cervical segments, restoring the motion the muscle is guarding. Part of pediatric and infant chiropractic.

Soft tissue release

Gentle, graded release of the tight muscle down the side of the neck. Brief, and most babies tolerate it well.

Daily home exercises

Simple stretches and positioning you do several times a day. This is the part that determines the outcome, and we will teach it until you feel confident.

Environment changes

Which end of the cot, which side the mobile hangs, how you carry and how you set up tummy time. Free, and surprisingly powerful.

How Long Does Torticollis Take to Resolve?

Most cases improve substantially over several weeks to a few months, and babies who start early tend to resolve faster. We remeasure rotation and tilt each visit, so progress is a number rather than an impression. Cases involving a fibrous thickening in the muscle take longer, and some benefit from physical therapy alongside our care, which we will suggest if we think it is needed.

When to Call Your Pediatrician Instead

See your pediatrician if the tilt appeared suddenly rather than gradually, if it comes with fever, if your baby seems in pain when the neck is moved, if there is a lump other than the typical muscle thickening, if there is any change in vision or eye movement, or if there is no progress at all with care.

None of that is a chiropractic problem, and we will send you to your pediatrician or to urgent care rather than adjust around it. We are also happy to work alongside your pediatrician, lactation consultant or pediatric dentist, and we would rather co-manage than compete for your baby care.

Questions We Get Asked Most

Will my baby head shape correct itself?

Skull shape often improves considerably once the head turn preference resolves and pressure gets distributed evenly, especially in the first months while growth is rapid. More significant flattening sometimes needs a pediatric assessment for a helmet, which your pediatrician would guide.

Is chiropractic care for torticollis safe?

The technique is extremely gentle, using sustained fingertip pressure rather than any twisting movement. Combined with home stretching it is a conservative, well-established approach to a mechanical problem.

Do I need physical therapy as well?

Sometimes, and we will tell you if we think so. Cases with significant muscle thickening or motor delay often do best with both. We are not territorial about it.

How soon should I bring my baby in?

As soon as you notice it. Early care is easier care, and the knock-on effects on feeding, head shape and milestones are much simpler to prevent than to correct later. Our latch difficulty page covers the feeding side.
