Infant Reflux and Spit-Up Support in Woodstock, GA
Most infant spit-up is normal
.
Reflux is a word that covers a huge range. At one end is a happy baby who soaks three outfits a day and is otherwise thriving, which is normal and needs nothing but laundry. At the other is a baby who arches, screams during feeds, refuses the breast or bottle and is not gaining weight, which needs your pediatrician promptly.
Where we fit is in the middle of that range, and only for a specific part of it. A baby who cannot comfortably turn or extend through the neck and upper back feeds differently, swallows more air and lies less comfortably afterward. That is mechanical, and it is worth checking.
Why Do Some Babies Struggle So Much With This?
These are the things we look for underneath the symptom.
Immature valve mechanics
The muscle at the top of the stomach is still developing in the first months, so milk comes back up easily. This is the normal part, it improves with time, and no treatment changes the timeline.
Neck and upper back restriction
Feeding requires a baby to turn, extend and swallow in a coordinated way. Restriction through the upper neck or first ribs changes that coordination, leading to more air swallowed and more discomfort after a feed.
Feeding position and latch
A shallow latch or a consistently awkward position increases air intake. This overlaps heavily with latch difficulty, and often needs a lactation consultant alongside us.
Nervous system tone
Digestion is regulated by the autonomic nervous system. A baby held in a heightened state digests less comfortably, which is why unsettled evenings and reflux symptoms so often arrive together.
What Do Parents Notice?
- Frequent spit-up, sometimes forceful, often during or after feeds
- Arching backwards, pulling away or stiffening during a feed
- Crying during or immediately after feeding
- Preference for being held upright and distress when laid flat
- Frequent hiccups, gulping or a clicking sound while feeding
- Poor sleep, particularly in the first hour after a feed
Normal Spit-Up or Reflux That Needs Attention?
This is the distinction that matters most, and it is mostly about the baby rather than the volume.
| What you see | Usually normal | Needs pediatric review |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | Frequent but the baby is content | With pain, arching or feeding refusal |
| Weight | Gaining steadily along their curve | Slow gain or weight loss |
| Colour | Milk coloured | Green, bloody or coffee coloured |
| Force | Easy spill or small posset | Forceful, projectile, worsening |
How Do We Assess a Baby?
We check whether your baby can turn and extend equally in both directions, look at the first ribs and upper back, and ask you to feed while we watch, because how a baby feeds tells us more than how they lie on a table.
A first visit for a baby is mostly conversation and gentle hands. We take a full birth and feeding history, watch how your baby moves, turns and settles, and check the spine and cranium with light fingertip contact. Nothing about the examination is forceful and most babies sleep or feed through it. You get a clear explanation of what we found and whether we think we can help, and if we do not think we can, we will tell you that instead of booking a plan.
What Does Care Involve?
Gentle, brief and focused on the mechanics of feeding and lying comfortably.
Feather-light adjusting
Fingertip pressure to the restricted segments of the neck and upper back. No twisting, no popping. This is what infant chiropractic actually looks like.
Diaphragm and rib work
Light release around the diaphragm and lower ribs, which sit directly around the top of the stomach and influence how comfortably a full baby settles.
Feeding and positioning advice
Upright time after feeds, side alternation, paced bottle feeding and burping technique. Small changes, delivered without making you feel judged.
Referral where it belongs
If we suspect tongue tie, cow milk protein intolerance or true reflux disease, we say so and point you to the right professional.
How Long Does It Take?
Where restriction is contributing, families often notice a difference in comfort after feeds within two or three visits. The spit-up volume itself frequently continues, because that part is developmental and improves as the valve matures, usually well before the first birthday. What we are aiming to change is the distress, not the laundry.
When to Call Your Pediatrician Instead
See your pediatrician promptly for poor weight gain, forceful or projectile vomiting, green or bloody vomit, feeding refusal, fewer wet nappies, blood in the stool, a fever in a young infant, or a baby who is unusually floppy or hard to rouse.
None of that is a chiropractic problem, and we will send you to your pediatrician or to urgent care rather than adjust around it. We are also happy to work alongside your pediatrician, lactation consultant or pediatric dentist, and we would rather co-manage than compete for your baby care.
Questions We Get Asked Most
Can chiropractic stop my baby spitting up?
Probably not, and we would not promise that. Spit-up volume is largely developmental. What often changes is how comfortable your baby is during and after feeds, which is usually the part parents are actually distressed about.
Is my baby in pain or just messy?
A useful rule of thumb is whether your baby is content between episodes and gaining weight steadily. A happy spitter is a laundry problem. Arching, feeding refusal and pain point to something that needs looking at properly.
Do you work with lactation consultants?
Regularly, and gladly. Feeding mechanics and structural restriction are two halves of the same problem, and babies do best when both get addressed. We will refer if we think that is what is needed.
Is it safe alongside reflux medication?
Yes, and medication decisions stay with your pediatrician. Nothing we do interferes with it, and we will never suggest stopping something your doctor has prescribed.
