Tension Headache Relief in Woodstock, GA
Tension headaches usually start in the neck rather than the head
.
Tension headaches follow a schedule. You wake up fine, the base of your skull tightens by mid-morning, and by four in the afternoon there is a band of pressure around your head and a dull throb behind your eyes. Two painkillers, an early night, repeat tomorrow.
The reason that cycle is so predictable is that the source is mechanical. The nerves supplying the upper neck share pathways with the nerves supplying your head and face, so a restricted upper cervical joint gets felt above the neck rather than in it.
What Causes Tension Headaches?
These are the things we look for underneath the symptom.
Upper cervical joint restriction
The top two segments of your neck produce most of your head rotation and sit directly beneath the muscles that refer pain into the skull. When they stop moving well, the referral pattern begins.
Suboccipital muscle overload
The small muscles at the base of the skull work constantly to hold your head level. Once your head sits forward of your shoulders they never get a break, and their referral pattern lands squarely behind the eyes.
Jaw clenching
Clenching, often at night and often unnoticed, loads the temples and the muscles that share nerve supply with the upper neck. Morning headaches with a tired jaw usually point here.
A nervous system held in a stress response
Elevated resting muscle tone is the physical footprint of chronic stress. It is measurable, and it explains why headache frequency tracks so closely with the intensity of your week.
What Does a Tension Headache Feel Like?
- A band of pressure around the head rather than one sharp point
- Pain that starts at the base of the skull and builds forward
- Aching behind or above the eyes by late afternoon
- Tight, tender muscles across the neck and shoulders
- Worse after screen-heavy days and better on holiday
- Little or no nausea and no visual aura
Is It Tension, Migraine or Coming From Your Neck?
These get mixed up constantly, and the distinction changes the plan. This is the short version of how we sort them.
| Feature | Tension headache | Migraine | Cervicogenic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pattern | Both sides, band-like pressure | Usually one side, throbbing | One side, starts in the neck |
| Builds | Through the day | In attacks lasting hours to days | With neck position and movement |
| Other symptoms | Muscle tightness only | Nausea, light and sound sensitivity | Reduced neck rotation |
| What helps here | Upper cervical work and muscle release | Care aimed at autonomic balance | Restoring specific neck motion |
How Do We Find the Cause?
We check how much rotation your upper cervical segments have, whether the referral pattern reproduces from the suboccipital muscles, and what your resting muscle tone looks like on surface EMG. That combination usually makes the source obvious.
Your first visit is a discovery visit. It includes a full consultation, a set of INSiGHT nervous system scans and, when your history calls for it, digital X-rays taken on site. You leave with a Report of Findings in plain language: what we found, what we would do about it, and how we will measure whether it is working.
What Does Care for Tension Headaches Look Like?
The target is the neck and the load on it, not the head where you feel it.
Upper cervical adjusting
Specific adjustments to the restricted segments at the top of the neck. Most people notice the change in headache frequency before they notice a change in neck comfort.
Suboccipital release
Hands-on work through the muscles at the base of the skull, which is often the moment the pressure behind the eyes lifts.
Massage therapy
Massage therapy across the neck, shoulders and chest reduces the pull holding your head forward, so the adjustment lasts longer than the drive home.
The two habits that matter
Screen height and phone position. We work out the specific changes with you, because those two undo more headaches than any stretch routine.
How Quickly Do Headaches Change?
Frequency usually moves before intensity. Four headaches a week becoming two is real progress even if the two still feel the same. We ask you to track days rather than severity, because that number is far less influenced by how a single afternoon went. Most people have a clear read on whether care is working within a few weeks.
When You Need Something Other Than Chiropractic
A headache needs urgent medical assessment if it is the worst of your life and came on suddenly, if it follows a head injury, if it comes with fever and a stiff neck, if there is weakness, slurred speech or vision loss, or if headaches are new and progressively worsening after age 50.
We screen for those findings at every first visit, and we refer the same day when we see them. If a fair trial of care is not moving your objective findings, we will say so and point you to the right practitioner rather than keep you in the schedule.
Questions We Get Asked Most
Can a chiropractor help tension headaches?
Frequently, because most tension headaches are referred from the neck and its muscles. If your headaches reproduce when we load the upper cervical joints or the suboccipital muscles, that is a good sign this is the right kind of care for you.
Will I have to stop taking painkillers?
Nobody will ask you to tough anything out. We do talk about frequency, because using pain relief most days can create a rebound pattern of its own, which is worth knowing about and worth discussing with your prescriber.
Why are my headaches worse at the end of the day?
Because they are load-driven. Every hour your head sits forward of your shoulders adds work for the muscles that refer pain into your skull. The pain shows up when the load has accumulated, which is why afternoons are the usual peak.
What if my headaches are actually migraines?
Then the plan changes. Migraine is a neurological event rather than a muscular one, and we approach it through autonomic balance measured on INSiGHT scanning. See our migraine page for how that differs.
