Migraine Care in Woodstock, GA
Migraine is a neurological event, not a severe headache, and how well your autonomic nervous system regulates itself is part of the picture
.
Anyone who has had migraines is tired of being told to drink more water. The attacks cost you days, they are unpredictable enough to make planning difficult, and the difference between a migraine and a bad headache is obvious to everyone who has had one and to nobody who has not.
We want to be straightforward about what chiropractic is and is not here. We do not treat migraines and we cannot promise to stop them. What we can do is assess and support the autonomic nervous system, which plays a part in how migraine attacks are triggered and how well your body recovers between them.
What Is Actually Happening in a Migraine?
Migraine is complex and individual. These are the pieces we can assess and influence.
Autonomic regulation
Your autonomic nervous system controls blood vessel tone, digestion and how you handle stress. In many migraine patients it scans as heavily weighted toward the sympathetic, or stress, side. That tells us something useful about resilience between attacks.
Upper cervical involvement
The nerves of the upper neck share pathways with the trigeminal system, which is central to migraine pain. Restriction there does not cause migraine, but it can contribute to the load that makes an attack more likely.
Cumulative trigger load
Most people do not have one trigger, they have a threshold. Poor sleep, a skipped meal, hormonal shifts and a stressful week stack until the threshold is crossed. Lowering the baseline load matters more than hunting for a single culprit.
Poor recovery capacity
Heart rate variability reflects how well your body shifts out of a stress state. When that number is low, everything takes longer to recover from, including an attack.
How Do You Know It Is a Migraine?
- Throbbing or pulsing pain, often on one side of the head
- Nausea, sometimes vomiting
- Sensitivity to light, sound or smell that sends you to a dark room
- Visual aura, tingling or speech changes before the pain begins
- Attacks lasting from several hours to a few days
- A hangover-like day afterwards, often with brain fog
Migraine or Something Else?
Getting the label right matters, because the care that helps one does very little for the other.
| Feature | Migraine | Tension or cervicogenic headache |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Throbbing, often one-sided | Pressure, band-like or neck-driven |
| Warning signs | Aura, mood or appetite change beforehand | None, it simply builds |
| Nausea and light sensitivity | Common | Uncommon |
| Neck movement | Not usually the trigger | Reproduces or worsens the pain |
How Do We Find the Cause?
Our interest is in your baseline between attacks, not just the attacks themselves. Thermography shows autonomic asymmetry, heart rate variability shows recovery capacity, and surface EMG shows what your neck is doing all day.
Your first visit is a discovery visit. It includes a full consultation, a set of INSiGHT nervous system scans and, when your history calls for it, digital X-rays taken on site. You leave with a Report of Findings in plain language: what we found, what we would do about it, and how we will measure whether it is working.
What Would Care Look Like?
The goal is a lower baseline load and better recovery, measured rather than assumed.
Specific upper cervical care
Gentle, precise adjustments where the upper neck shows restriction. This is low-force work, not the sort of thing anyone in a sensitive state needs to brace for.
Objective nervous system tracking
INSiGHT scanning at the start and at set checkpoints, so the question of whether anything is changing has an answer that does not depend on memory.
Soft tissue and stress load work
Massage therapy addresses the neck and shoulder tension that adds to your daily load. Several of our therapists work specifically on calming an overloaded nervous system.
An honest trial and an honest review
We agree up front on how many weeks we are trialling, and what we expect to see. If attack frequency has not moved, we say so.
How Do We Know If It Is Helping?
One number: attacks per month. We ask you to keep a simple count, because memory reshapes itself and a single bad week can feel like proof that nothing has changed. Alongside that, we look at whether your scans are trending toward better autonomic balance. If neither number moves within an agreed trial period, this is not the right care for you and we will help you find what is.
When You Need Something Other Than Chiropractic
Seek urgent medical care for a sudden severe headache unlike any before, a headache with fever and a stiff neck, weakness, drooping or speech changes, a first migraine-like attack after age 50, or aura that lasts more than an hour or affects only one eye.
We screen for those findings at every first visit, and we refer the same day when we see them. If a fair trial of care is not moving your objective findings, we will say so and point you to the right practitioner rather than keep you in the schedule.
Questions We Get Asked Most
Can chiropractic cure migraines?
No, and anyone promising that is overselling. What we can do is assess the autonomic and cervical contributions to your baseline load and support them with specific care, then measure whether your attack frequency changes.
Is the adjustment safe during an attack?
We usually do not adjust mid-attack, because being touched and moved is the last thing most people want then. Care is scheduled between attacks, where the work of raising your threshold actually happens.
Do I keep taking my migraine medication?
Yes. Nothing we do replaces medical management, and we are glad to work alongside your neurologist or prescriber. Medication decisions belong with them.
Are my migraines related to my neck?
Sometimes closely, sometimes not at all. If your attacks reliably begin with neck stiffness, the cervicogenic headache picture may be a better fit, and that responds very well to this kind of care.
